한강이 외설 작가? "An Obscene Nobel Laureate?" 영어/한글

Han Kang, a Korean novelist, has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. As her compatriot, I am immensely proud of her achievement.

While most Koreans are proud that a fellow Korean has won the Nobel Prize, some express discomfort with certain aspects of Han Kang's representative work, "The Vegetarian." They find some of the explicit sexual descriptions disturbing and even label her as an obscene writer. However, dismissing a work as obscene simply because it contains explicit sexual descriptions is excessive.

Obscenity refers to writing that aims to sexually arouse. However, Han Kang's sexual descriptions serve the purpose of storytelling. There is no apparent intention to excite the reader. In fact, the descriptions of sexual acts are often quite dry and brief. To denounce such writing as obscene is akin to dismissing a nude painting as pornography.

The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded based on literary merit. In this regard, Han Kang's work is exceptional. While reading "The Vegetarian," I was continually amazed at how poetically, delicately, and accurately she depicted the human psyche.

You can still acknowledge the literary value of her work even if you disagree with the underlying ideas. Throughout the novel, I couldn't help but think that if the characters had encountered Jesus, they wouldn't have suffered such anguish and torment. If Christians approach this work as a poetic and insightful portrayal of a life without Jesus, they would be able to appreciate Han Kang's brilliance.

소설가 한강 씨가 노벨 문학상을 받았습니다. 대한민국 국민으로서 너무나도 자랑스럽습니다.

대부분의 한국인이 한국인이 노벨 상을 탔다는 것을 자랑스러워 하지만, 한강씨의 대표작인 ‘채식주의자’ 특정 부분에 관해 불편을 느끼는 사람들이 있는 것 같습니다. 노골적인 성적 묘사가 나오기 때문입니다. 외설작가라고 매도 하는 사람도 있습니다. 그러나 성적 묘사가 노골적이라고 그 작품을 외설물로 치부하는 것은 지나치다고 생각합니다.

외설물이란, 성적인 자극을 목표로 쓰여진 글을 말합니다. 그러나 한강 씨의 성적 묘사는 스토리텔링을 위한 것입니다. 독자를 흥분시키기 위한 의도는 전연 안 보입니다. 성행위 자체도 메마르게 느껴질 정도로 담담하게 기록하고 있습니다. 이런 글을 외설이라고 비방하는 것은, 미술가의 누드화를 춘화로 매도하는 것과 마찬가지라고 생각합니다.

노벨 문학상은 문학적인 가치에 기초하여 주어지는 것입니다. 이런 면에서 한강 씨의 작품은 탁월합니다. 채식주의자를 읽으면서, 어쩌면 이렇게 인간의 심리를 시적으로, 섬세하게, 정확하게, 묘사했는지 감탄이 절로 나옵니다.

문학 작품으로서의 가치를 인정하면서도, 내용에 담긴 사상에 관해서는 얼마든지 동의하지 않을 수 있습니다. 저는 채식주의자를 읽는 내내, 소설에 등장하는 사람들이 예수님을 만났더라면 이런 고뇌와 고통에 빠지지 않았을 텐데, 라는 생각을 멈출 수가 없었습니다.

책에 포함된 성적 묘사에 불편한 크리스천들이 있다면, 예수님 없는 삶이 얼마나 비참할 수 있는지를, 시적으로, 통찰력 있게 그려 놓은 작품으로 접근한다면, 한강 작가의 탁월함을 보게 되지 않을까 싶습니다.
