The declining birthrate in Korea has become a national crisis. In 2022, the total fertility rate was 0.778, setting the lowest record among OECD countries. In 2023, it further declined to 0.72, breaking its own record. (The total fertility rate represents the average number of expected births per woman over her lifetime.)

There are various reasons why young couples in Korea hesitate to have children. These include difficulties in finding suitable housing for raising children, the high cost for children’s education, and disadvantages upon returning to work after childbirth.

Societal attitudes may also contribute to making childbearing more challenging. By emphasizing the hardships of raising children, we inadvertently diminish the joy of parenting. Today’s Korean dramas often depict children as defiant and acting superior over their parents. The desire to have children has inevitably waned.

Interestingly, a survey shows that Christian couples tend to have more children than the general population. Also, Christian unmarried individuals express a stronger desire to marry than their non-Christian counterparts. Why might this be the case?

One reason could be the presence of happy couples within churches. Many young people hesitate to marry because their parents don’t seem happy in their marriages. Their marriage is not appealing. However, many young people change their idea about marriage when they see many happy couples in church communities.

Young Christian couples have opportunities to watch children’s Christmas pageants or serve in children’s Sunday school, experiencing the adorable moments of having children around. Perhaps this influences their desire to have children themselves.

One way for churches to fulfill the Lord's command to be "the light of the world" and "the salt of the earth" may be to encourage and support church members in their roles as happy couples, contented parents, and thriving families, motivating singles to get married and couples to have children.

우리나라 저출산율이 국가적 위기가 되고 있습니다. 2022년도 합계출산율이 0.778이었습니다. OECD 국가 최저 기록입니다. 그런데 2023년에는, 자체 최저 기록을 갱신하는 0.72이었습니다. (합계 출산율이란 여성 한 명이 평생 동안 낳을 것으로 예상되는 평균 출생아 수)

젊은 여성들이 아기를 안 낳으려는 데에는 여러가지 이유가 있겠습니다. 자녀를 낳아 키울 주거 환경 마련이 힘들다. 자녀 교육비 감당이 어렵다. 출산 후 복직할 때 불이익을 당한다 등.

이에 더해서, 사회적 분위기가 자녀 출산을 더 어렵게 만드는 것 같습니다. 미디어에서 자녀를 키우는 어려움은 자주 다루지만, 자녀를 키우는 즐거움을 다루는 예는 드뭅니다. 옛날 드라마에서는 자녀들이 순진하고 귀여웠는데 요즈음 드라마에서는 자녀들이 영악해서 부모에게 대들고, 부모를 훈계하려 듭니다. 이런 분위기가 바뀌지 않는 한, 정부에서 어떤 시책을 내 놓더라도, 출산율을 높이기 어렵겠다는 생각이 듭니다.

그런데 목회데이터연구소장 지용근 대표에 의하면, 크리스천 미혼자들은 일반 싱글보다 더 많이 결혼하겠다고 하고, 크리스천들 부부들은 일반 부부들보다 더 많이 아기를 낳겠다고 한답니다. 왜 그럴까?

젊은이들이 결혼을 하지 않으려는 이유 중의 하나는, 엄마 아빠가 행복해 보이지 않고, 이들의 결혼 생활이 매력적으로 보이지 않기 때문입니다. 그러나 교회 안에는 행복한 부부들이 많습니다. 이들을 보면서 결혼하고 싶은 욕구가 생기지 않나 싶습니다.

또 교회 안에서는 크리스마스 발표회 등을 통해 어린이들의 귀여운 모습을 접할 기회가 많습니다. 또 다양한 자녀 양육 프로그램이 제공됩니다. 이러다 보니 아기를 갖고 싶은 욕구도 생기고, 아기를 낳아 키울 자신감도 생기는 것 같습니다.

예수님께서 “너희(교회)는 세상의 빛과 소금이다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 빛과 소금이 되는 방법은 시대와 상황에 따라 달라져야 합니다. 오늘날 대한민국에서 빛과 소금이 되는 길은, 행복한 부부, 행복한 부모, 행복한 가정의 모습을 보여서, 싱글들이 결혼하고 싶게 만들고, 젊은 부부들이 아기를 낳고 싶게 만드는 것이 아닌가 생각합니다.
