There are certain practices in Korean churches that are sometimes overly praised, such as early retirement, church planting, and disowning church properties.

I can understand the sentiments. Many pastors refuse to retire even when they are too old to perform ministerial duties adequately, so pastors who retire early are praised. Many pastors are obsessed with church growth, so pastors who willingly send out church members to plant new churches are lauded. Many pastors are so proud of their big and costly church buildings, so pastors who refuse to build but rent instead receive applause.

Certain practices cannot be fully good or fully bad in and of themselves; it depends on whether they help accomplish the mission that Jesus gave to the church. The church’s mission is to bring people to Jesus and make them His disciples. This purpose must be the measuring stick to determine whether something is good or bad.

If a pastor retires early because he feels he could no longer perform his ministerial duties effectively, it’s good. But if he retires simply because he wants to show that he doesn’t have ministerial ambition, it’s bad.

If a pastor plants new churches because it would help to save more people, it’s good. But if he does that because he values his reputation as an accomplished church planter, that’s bad.

If a pastor builds because he thinks a big church building is the sign of his ministerial success, it’s bad. But if he does so because it helps with evangelism and education, it’s good.

Nothing is good or bad by itself. It depends. If it helps fulfill the mission of the church, they are good. If they do not, they are bad.

교회 안에서 절대적인 가치가 아닌 것에 절대적인 가치를 부여하는 수가 있습니다. 조기 은퇴, 교회 분립, 상가 교회가 예가 되지 않을까 싶습니다.

이런 것들에 가치를 부여하고 귀하게 여기는 데에는 이유가 있습니다.

나이 들어 목회를 잘 못하면서도 담임 목회에서 물러나지 않으려는 목사들이 생기니까, 조기 은퇴를 선언한 목회자들이 귀하게 여겨집니다. 성장주의에 사로잡힌 목사들이 많으니까, 교회 분립을 선택한 목회자들이 멋져 보입니다. 큰 교회당을 건축하면 목회에 성공했다고 믿는 목사들이 있으니까, 건축하지 않고 상가에서 예배 드리겠다는 목회자들이 아름다워 보입니다.

그러나 조기 은퇴, 교회 분립, 상가 교회, 그 자체에 가치가 있는 것은 아닙니다.

좋고, 나쁘고, 잘하고, 못하고, 가치를 평가할 때에는 기준이 있어야 합니다. 교회에서 가치 기준은 무엇이 되어야 할까요? 예수님이 교회를 세우신 목적이 되어야 한다고 생각합니다. 교회는 예수님의 몸이고, 예수님은 교회의 머리이시기 때문입니다. 이 목적에 부합하면 좋은 것이고, 부합하지 않으면 안 좋은 것입니다.

예수님께서 교회를 세우신 궁극적인 목적은 깨어진 세상을 회복하는 것입니다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위한 출발점은 영혼 구원하여 제자 만드는 것입니다. (마태 28:19~20). 좋은지, 나쁜지는, 이 목적에 비추어 판단해야 한다고 생각합니다.

담임 목사가 조기 은퇴하는 것이 진실로 교회 발전에 도움이 된다면, 좋은 것입니다. 그러나 교회 문제가 산적해 있는데 조기 은퇴를 해버린다면, 안 좋을 수도 있습니다.

교회 분립이 영혼 구원하여 제자 만드는 일에 도움이 된다면, 좋은 것입니다. 그러나 이를 고려하지 않고 분립 자체에 가치를 부여한다면, 안 좋은 것입니다.

건물을 잘 지어 놓으면 사람들이 모일 거라 생각해서 건축을 하면, 안 좋은 것입니다. 그러나 비신자에게 전도하고, 교인들을 양육하고, 자녀들을 교육하는 데 필요해서 건축을 한다면, 좋은 것입니다.

교회의 모든 결정, 프로그램, 이벤트는 교회 존재 목적에 비추어, 좋고 나쁘고를 가려야 한다고 생각합니다.
