개에게서 배웁니다 (A Lesson From A Dog Trainer)

I recently watched a dog training show on TV. A dog owner brought his dog to a trainer because it habitually charged at other dogs on walks, making him concerned for his dog's safety. The dog was always full of energy and excitement, leading the owner rather than the other way around. When the dog saw something interesting, it dragged its owner to wherever it wanted to go.

The trainer explained that the dog could sense its owner’s tension when another dog approached, and he would respond with energy and excitement. The dog owner unconsciously got anxious and tense, transmitting those feelings through the leash, which then caused the dog to become excited and aggressive.

To prove the point, the trainer put a blindfold on the dog owner, had him grip the dog's leash tightly, then led the dog and owner for a walk. They met many dogs along the way, but the dog finished the walk peacefully, not even barking once. The trainer explained that the owner was not tense because he could not see the approaching dogs, and the dog was not excited because the owner was relaxed.

I believe this principle applies to pastors as well. Church problems sometimes escalate because the pastor gets too anxious and tense. The pastor’s emotions are transmitted to the congregation, making them nervous, worried, and agitated, which amplifies the problems.

Ukraine has been able to stand up against Russia when invaded because President Zelenskyy has shown a calm and confident appearance. This demeanor reassures the people, making them confident that they will eventually overcome their adversary.

So how can a pastor stay calm when there are unforeseen mishaps in his church? The answer is to trust Jesus.

Faith is trust. A person who lives in faith is calm and relaxed because he trusts Jesus to manifest His power, love, and wisdom through him. In fact, staying calm in an adverse situation is a sign that you live in faith.

TV에서 개 훈련시키는 프로그램을 시청했습니다. 개가 에너지가 넘쳐서, 산책할 때에는 주인이 개를 이끄는 것이 아니라 개가 주인을 이끕니다. 색다른 것을 발견하면 그리로 달려가고, 주인은 끌려갑니다. 다른 개를 만나면 잡아먹을 듯이 짖으며 달려드는데, 제어가 안 됩니다. 주인은 개 안전이 우려되어서 개 트레이너에게 도움을 요청했습니다.

개가 이처럼 흥분하여 날뛰는 것은, 주인이 긴장했기 때문이라고 트레이너는 설명했습니다. 다른 개가 접근할 때에, 개 주인이 불안해져서 긴장하고, 이 긴장감이 목 줄을 통해 전달되어 개를 흥분시킨다는 것입니다.

이를 증명해 보이기 위하여 트레이너는 개 주인의 눈에 안대를 씌우고, 개 고삐를 짧게 쥐도록 하고, 개 주인의 손을 이끌어 산책을 했습니다. 산책 도중에 많은 다른 개를 만났지만, 이 개는 한 번도 날뛰지 않고 평화롭게 산책을 마쳤습니다. 접근해 오는 개들이 눈에 들어오지 않으니까 주인이 긴장하지 않았고, 주인이 긴장하지 않으니까 개가 흥분하지 않고 평화롭게 산책을 마쳤다는 것이 트레이너의 설명이었습니다.

이 쇼를 보면서 저는 교회 생각이 났습니다. 쉽게 끝날 사소한 문제가 크게 확대되는 것을 종종 보는데, 목사가 너무 긴장하고 불안해 해서 그런 것이 아닌가는 생각이 듭니다. 이런 감정이 전달되어 교인들도 불안해지고 흥분하게 되는 것입니다.

교회 안에 문제가 생겼을 때에 목사는 긴장을 푼, 침착한 모습을 보여주어야 합니다. 작은 우크라이나가 러시아 대국의 침공을 받았는데도, 무너지지 않고 버틸 수 있는 것은 대통령 젤렌스키가 긴장하지 않는, 자신감 넘치는 모습을 보이고 있기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 이런 모습이 국민들을 안심시키고, 결국 승리할 것이라는 소망을 심어주는 것 같습니다.

어떻게 담임 목사가 긴장하지 않고, 두려워하지 않을 수 있을까? 예수님을 진정으로 신뢰해야 합니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 돌아가시고 부활하셔서, 죄와 질병과 사단과 정복하신 승리의 왕이십니다. 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 가지신 분이십니다. 이분이 우리 인생의 주인이시고, 교회의 머리이십니다.

믿음은 신뢰입니다. 신뢰하는 사람은 긴장하지 않습니다. 신뢰하는지 않는지는, 긴장해 있는지 아닌지를 보아 알 수 있습니다. 예수님을 진정으로 믿으면 긴장하지 않습니다. 긴장을 풀 때 교회에 문제가 생겨도 확대되지 않고 흐지부지 사라집니다.
