한국 교회 쇠락 이유 (The Decline of Churches in Korea)-영어/한글
Korean churches are rapidly declining. There's a widespread fear that they might end up like European churches: empty buildings with no congregants.
Many people are analyzing this dire situation and trying to find the cause of the decline. However, the reason may be surprisingly simple.
Christians have become affluent.
When the gospel reaches impoverished areas, people accept it because they're spiritually hungry. But the gospel often brings material blessings. As people become financially secure and their physical needs are easily met, their spiritual hunger diminishes. Their once fervent faith becomes a mere formality. Consequently, their children may find their parents' church life unappealing, leading them to leave the church.
If the primary reason for the church's decline is the loss of spiritual hunger, the solution may be simple: fill the church with people who are hungry.
There are many people around us who have a hunger for God, even if they may not realize it themselves yet: the poor, the sick, and the imprisoned (Matthew 25). They are those who are oppressed, starving, and without home or family (Isaiah 58). We need to seek these people, invite them to churches, and serve them to help them encounter Jesus.
Many house churches are experiencing growth, and attracting young people. The primary reason is that, unlike many traditional churches that are more interested in those who can fit in comfortably, they seek those who are spiritually, emotionally, and financially hungry. They serve these people and help them meet Jesus.
Today's churches are primarily composed of affluent people who are quite self-sufficient. The pastor's sermons and church programs are also tailored to their needs. Trying to revive a church with these people would be like trying to crack a nut with an egg.
God's agape love flows downward, like water does in nature. God's concern and love naturally gravitate towards the low places where the poor, the weak, and the suffering are. When we serve these people and introduce Jesus to them, God will be pleased and revive our churches.

한국 교회가 급속히 쇠락하고 있다는데 대해서는, 거의 모두가 동의하는 것 같습니다. 유럽처럼 교인 없이 건물만 남게 될지 모른다는 위기감도 팽배해 있습니다.
교회가 쇠락하는 이유에 관해 많은 분석이 이루어지고 있고, 이에 따른 여러 가지 해결책이 제시되고 있습니다. 그러나 한국 교회가 쇠락하고 있는 이유는 의외로 단순하지 않은가 싶습니다.
교인들이 먹고 살만 하게 되었기 때문입니다.
역사적으로, 빈곤한 지역에 복음이 들어가면 사람들이 마음을 열고 복음을 받아드립니다. 물질적으로, 영적으로 갈급하기 때문입니다. 그런데 복음에는 보통 물질적인 복이 뒤따릅니다. 그래서 예수를 믿게 되면 경제적인 여유도 생깁니다. 그러면서 영적 갈급함이 사라집니다. 뜨거웠던 신앙 생활이 형식적인 교회 생활로 변질됩니다. 이러한 형식적인 교회 생활이 자녀들 눈에는 매력적으로 보이지 않습니다. 그래서 이들이 교회를 떠나기 시작합니다. 이런 과정을 거치면서 교회는 서서히 쇠락해 갑니다.
교회 쇠락의 주 원인이 교인들에게서 갈급함이 사라졌기 때문이라는 진단이 맞다면, 처방이 쉽게 나옵니다. 갈급함이 있는 사람들로 교회를 채우는 것입니다.
우리 주위에는 갈급한 사람들이 많습니다. 주리고, 목마르고, 헐벗고, 병들었고, 감옥에 갇힌 사람들입니다(마태 25장). 결박 받고, 멍에 메고, 압제 받고, 굶주리고, 떠도는 사람들입니다(이사야 58장). 이러한 사람들은 물질적으로, 정신적으로, 영적으로 갈급합니다. 이런 사람들을 교회로 초청하고, 섬기고, 예수님을 소개해야 합니다.
비신자 전도가 안 된다는 요즈음에도, 가정교회에서는 전도가 제법 이루어지고 있습니다. 갈급한 사람들에게 초점을 맞추었기 때문입니다. 교회에 도움이 될 사람을 찾지 않고, 교회의 도움을 필요로 하는 사람을 찾았습니다. 영적으로, 정신적으로, 경제적으로 갈급한 사람들을 찾아 목장에 초대하여 필요를 채워주고, 예수님을 소개했습니다.
일반 교회는 대부분 갈급함이 없는 사람들로 채워져 있습니다. 목사의 설교도, 교회의 프로그램도 이들의 필요를 채우는데 초점이 맞춰져 있습니다. 이러한 갈급함이 없는 사람들을 데리고, 교회를 갱신시켜 쇠락을 막는다는 것은 불가능합니다. 계란으로 바위를 치는 것과 마찬가지입니다.
하나님의 사랑은, 힘 없고, 약하고, 고통받고, 신음하는 사람들에게로 흘러갑니다. 하나님의 아가페 사랑은 낮은 곳으로 흐르는 사랑이기 때문입니다. 이러한 갈급한 사람들로 교회를 채우고, 이들을 섬기고, 복음을 전할 때, 하나님께서 기뻐하시고 교회를 부흥시키셔서 쇠락에서 벗어나게 해 주실 것입니다.
