존경받는 사람 되지 맙시다 (Don’t Seek Respect)-영어/한글

When I come across articles or lectures on how to become a model Christian or a respected leader, it makes me uncomfortable. This discomfort comes when focusing on oneself is emphasized over focusing on God.

If the focus is on becoming an exemplary Christian or a reputable leader, we concentrate on how others see us and neglect to pay attention to God's perspective. Such efforts lead to a cycle of pride if one succeeds and despair if one fails.

Becoming a model or a leader should not be the goal, it should be the result of earnestly seeking God's will and obeying Him. Rather than fixating on how we are perceived by people, we should focus on how God sees us. If we faithfully listen to God and obey Him, people will want to emulate our Christian walk, and they will be more inclined to submit to our authority and follow our leadership.

어떻게 하면 존경받는 크리스천이 되고, 존경받는 리더가 될 수 있을까, 글을 쓰고, 강연하는 분들이 있습니다. 이런 글이나 강연을 접할 때 웬일인지 불편함을 느낍니다.

왜 그런가 생각해 보니, 존경받는 사람이 되려 한다는 것은 남의 눈을 통해 자신을 평가한다는 의미이기 때문입니다.

남의 눈을 통해 자신을 평가하기 시작하면 문제가 생깁니다. 사람들이 존경해 주면 기쁩니다. 그러나 살짝 교만해 집니다. 사람들이 존경해 주지 않으면, 섭섭합니다. 약함을 가리려다, 이중적인 삶을 살 수 있습니다.

진정으로 존경받는 사람이 되고 싶으면, 역설적이지만 존경 받는 사람이 되려는 욕구를 버려야 합니다. 사람들에게 인정 받으려 말고, 예수님께 인정 받으려 해야 합니다. 존경받는 것은 결과이지 목표가 될 수 없습니다.

예수님을 닮으려다 보면, 본받겠다는 사람들이 생기고, 주님께 충성하다 보면, 따르는 사람들이 생깁니다.
