자신을 보는 은혜 (The Grace to See Ourselves)- In Korean & English

어떤 기자가 트럼프 대통령에게 물었습니다. “각하는 회개한 경험이 있습니까?” 트럼프 대통령은 잠시 생각하더니 이렇게 답했습니다. “난 회개할 만한 죄를 지은 기억이 없습니다.”

그러나 트럼프 대통령이 한 번도 죄를 지은 적이 없다고 믿는 사람은 거의 없을 것입니다. 죄를 짓고도 그것이 죄라는 사실을 깨닫지 못하고 있다고 생각할 것입니다.

그러나 자신의 죄를 보지 못하는 일은 트럼프 대통령에게만 한정된 문제가 아닙니다.

얼마 전 많은 사람들에게 존경받던 한 목사님이 세습 문제로 논란의 중심에 선 적이 있습니다. 많은 사람들이 그의 행동이 잘못되었다고 지적했지만, 정작 본인은 자신이 잘못을 저질렀다고 느끼지 않는 것처럼 보였습니다.

믿음이 없는 정치인이라면 그렇다 치더라도, 평생 성경을 연구하고 설교해 온 목회자가 왜 자신의 잘못을 보지 못할까요? 타락한 인간의 본성 때문입니다. 우리는 다른 사람의 잘못은 쉽게 보지만, 자신의 잘못은 잘 보지 못합니다.

그래서 우리에게는 성령님의 조명이 필요합니다. 성령님만이 말씀을 거울로 삼아 우리 자신을 보게 하십니다.

그러므로 우리는 성경 말씀을 자신에게 적용하는 습관을 가져야 합니다. 특별히 목회자에게는 이런 노력이 더욱 필요합니다. “순종하라, 섬겨라, 사랑하라”고 가르치다 보면, 자신이 이미 그렇게 살고 있다는 착각에 빠지기 쉽기 때문입니다.

많은 사람들이 목회자는 설교한 대로 살아야 한다고 말합니다. 맞는 말입니다. 그러나 저는 그것으로 충분치 않다고 생각합니다. 목사는 자신의 삶을 설교하는 사람이어야 합니다.

자신을 성찰하고 말씀을 자신에게 적용하지 않으면 목사는 점점 회개에서 멀어집니다. 교회는 성장할지 몰라도, 목회자는 어느새 성경에서 멀어져 대기업의 경영자처럼 되어 버릴 것입니다.

우리가 하나님께 구해야 할 가장 큰 은혜는 이것일지 모릅니다. 자신을 바로 볼 수 있는 은혜. 그리고 회개할 수 있는 마음입니다.

A reporter once asked President Donald Trump, “Have you ever repented?” After a brief pause, he replied, “I don’t recall committing any wrongdoings that require repentance.”

However, few people would believe that President Trump has never done anything wrong. Rather, most would say that he has committed wrongs but fails to recognize them as such.

Yet the inability to see one’s own sin is not a problem unique to President Trump.

Not long ago, a pastor who had been widely respected by many people found himself at the center of controversy over the issue of church succession. Many pointed out that his actions were wrong, yet he himself seemed not to recognize that he had done anything wrong.

If an unbelieving politician thinks this way, we might understand. But why would someone who has spent a lifetime studying and preaching Scripture fail to see his own fault?

The reason is simple: fallen human nature. We easily see the sins of others, but rarely our own. That is why we need the illumination of the Holy Spirit, who uses Scripture as a mirror to reveal our hearts.

This is especially crucial for pastors. Teaching others to obey, serve, and love can create the illusion that we are already living that way ourselves.

A pastor must not only preach sermons; he must preach his life. If a pastor fails to examine himself and apply the Word to his own life, he will gradually drift away from repentance. The church may continue to grow, but before he realizes it, the pastor may drift away from Scripture and become more like the CEO of a large corporation.

Perhaps the grace we most need from God is this: the grace to see ourselves clearly—and the humility to repent.
