하나님은 느긋하시다 (God Is Never in a Hurry)-In Korean & English

하나님과 동행하는 삶을 살려면, 그분의 느긋하심에 익숙해져야 합니다.

저에게는 약 400명의 가정교회 목사님과 사모님으로 구성된, ‘153 기도 요원’이라 불리우는 중보 기도 팀이 있습니다. 이분들은 제 기도 제목을 갖고 1주일에 세 번 이상, 5초 이상씩 중보 기도해 주십니다.

저는 이분들을 위해 새벽에 중보 기도를 합니다. 기도 제목은 교회, 목사님, 사모님 각각 두 가지입니다. 하루에 일곱 가정 씩 돌아가며 기도하는데, 1년이 지나면 기도 제목을 다시 돌려보내고, 요원들은 응답 여부와 새로운 기도 제목을 제출합니다.

그런데 기도 제목 가운데는 몇 년을 기도해도 응답이 없는 것들이 있습니다. 그러다 보면 그 기도 제목이 슬그머니 사라지곤 합니다. 응답을 포기했기 때문일 것입니다. 그런데 놀랍게도, 얼마 후 그 기도 제목이 뒤늦게 응답되는 것을 종종 봅니다.

이런 경험을 통해 저는 하나님께서는 참으로 느긋하신 분임을 깨닫습니다. 우리는 조바심을 내며 응답을 기대하지만, 하나님께서는 가장 좋은 때를 기다리십니다.

하나님께서 즉시 응답하지 않으시는 데에는 이유가 있습니다. 더 좋은 것을 주시기 위함입니다. 예를 들어, 하나님은 애굽을 탈출한 이스라엘 백성에게 가나안을 정복을 약속하셨지만 곧바로 이루게 하지 않으셨습니다. 급격한 전쟁으로 온 땅이 황폐해지면 맹수들이 번성하여 백성에게 해를 끼칠 수 있었기 때문입니다 (출 23:29~30).

또 하나님께서는 이사야를 비롯한 예언자들을 통해 바빌론 포로를 예고하시면서, 그후에 메시아가 나타나 평화의 시대를 열 것을 약속하셨습니다. 70년의 포로 생활을 마치고 돌아온 귀환민들은 이 예언이 곧바로 성취되리라 기대했을 지 모릅니다. 그러나 그것은 부분적으로 이루어졌을 뿐, 완전히 성취되지는 않았습니다. 수백 년이 지난 뒤에 예수님께서 오셨습니다. 제자들은 하나님의 나라가 이제 즉시 완성되지 않을까 기대했지만, 아니었습니다. 완전한 평화는 주님의 재림 이후에 이루어진다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

하나님의 시간은 우리의 시간과 다릅니다. 사도 베드로는 “주께는 하루가 천 년 같고, 천년이 하루 같다”(벧후 3:8)고 말했습니다. 우리가 생각하는 ‘즉시’와 하나님의 ‘즉시’는 같지 않습니다.

그러므로 기도 응답이 당장 오지 않는다고 조급해 할 필요 없습니다. 하나님은 반드시 응답하십니다. 다만 가장 선한 때를 기다리실 뿐입니다. 믿음의 삶이란, 내 기도가 원하는 대로 즉시 이루어질 것을 바라는 삶이 아니라, 응답을 확신하며 그분의 때를 기다리는 삶입니다.

To live a life of walking with God, we must become accustomed to His unhurried ways.

I have an intercessory prayer team of about 400 house church pastors and their wives. We call them the “153 Prayer Partners.” They pray for my prayer requests at least three times a week, for at least five seconds each time.

In return, I pray for seven families each day on a rotating basis. For each family, I pray for two requests concerning the church, two for the pastor, and two for his wife. After one year, I send their prayer requests back to them, and the partners report whether those requests have been answered and submit new ones.

Among the prayer requests, however, there are some that remain unanswered even after several years of prayer. Over time, those requests quietly disappear. Perhaps they fade away because people have given up expecting an answer. Yet surprisingly, I often see those very requests answered later on.

Through these experiences, I have come to realize that God is truly unhurried. While we grow anxious and urge Him for answers, He waits for the best possible time and then responds.

There is a reason God does not answer immediately. It is because He intends to give something better. For example, God promised the Israelites who had come out of Egypt that they would conquer Canaan, but He did not allow it to happen all at once. If the land had been suddenly devastated by rapid warfare, wild animals might have multiplied and endangered the people (Exodus 23:29–30).

Likewise, through prophets such as Isaiah, God foretold the Babylonian exile and promised that the Messiah would usher in an age of peace afterward. When the exiles returned after seventy years, they may have expected the prophecy to be fulfilled immediately. Yet it was only partially fulfilled at that time. Complete fulfillment did not come until centuries later, when Jesus came. His disciples expected the kingdom of God to be established at once, but they eventually realized that perfect peace would come only after the Lord’s return.

God’s sense of time is different from ours. The apostle Peter said, “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day” (2 Peter 3:8). What we call “immediate” is not the same as God’s “immediate.”

Therefore, there is no need to become impatient when our prayers are not answered right away. God will surely answer. He is simply waiting for the most fitting and gracious time. A life of faith is not a life of anxiously pressing for the fulfillment of His promises, but a life of confident trust—resting in the assurance that His answer will come in His perfect time.
