목사님 교회, 성경적입니까? (Is Your Church Biblical?) – In Korean & English

교회가 성경적인지, 아닌지는 궁극적으로는 열매를 보아 한다고 생각합니다. 신약 성경에 기록된 교회와 같은 열매를 맺으면 성경적인 교회이고, 그렇지 않다면 성경적인 교회라 할 수 없습니다.

그렇다면 신약 교회들은 어떤 열매를 맺었을까요? 첫째, 비신자들이 예수님을 믿었습니다. 둘째, 성도들의 삶이 변화되었습니다. 셋째, 교회 생활에 기쁨이 넘쳤습니다. (사도행전을 읽어보면 대부분의 교회가 역경을 겪고 있었지만, “기쁨이 충만하더라.”는 구절이 자주 등장합니다.)

이 기준에 비추어 보면, 전도는 되지만 성도들의 삶이 변하지 않는 교회는 아직 성경적인 교회는 아닙니다. 교인들의 삶은 변하지만 비신자 전도가 일어나지 않는 교회도 아직 성경적인 교회는 아닙니다. 영혼구원도 있고, 삶의 변화도 있지만, 교회에 기쁨이 없다면 그 또한 아직은 성경적인 교회라 할 수 없습니다.

1993년 제가 휴스턴서울교회 담임 목사로 부임한지 9개월만에 교회를 가정교회로 전환했습니다. 그러자 곧 성경적인 교회의 열매들이 나타나기 시작했습니다.

목장을 통해 비신자 전도가 이루졌습니다. 교회에 관심이 없었던 사람들이, 목장의 따뜻한 분위기에 이끌려 목장에 참석했고, 이어서 주일 예배에도 참여하게 되었으며, 마침내 예수님을 구주로 영접하게 되었습니다. 이런 변화를 본 주변의 비신자 친구들도 호기심을 가지고 목장에 참석하면서 많은 사람들이 예수를 믿게 되었습니다.

기신자들은 목자로 섬기면서 삶이 변했습니다. 대인 관계에 선을 긋고 그 선을 자신이 넘지도 않고, 남들이 넘어오는 것도 불편해 하던 깍쟁이 같던 사람들이, 목자가 되어 비신자들을 주님께 인도하려다 보니, 일방적으로 그들을 품고 사랑하며, 섬기고, 참고, 기다릴 수밖에 없었습니다. 그 과정에서 점점 예수님을 닮아가게 되었습니다.

이처럼 비신자가 예수를 믿고, 기신자의 삶이 변하며, 간증이 넘쳐나자 교회 안에 기쁨이 가득해졌습니다. 부정적인 말들이 사라지고, 활기가 넘쳤습니다. 박사 학위를 마치고 모교에 교수로 가는 것이 꿈이던 사람이, 교회를 떠날 수 없어 교수직의 기회를 포기하는 사례도 생겼습니다.

예수님은 열매를 보고 나무를 알 수 있다고 말씀하셨습니다. 어떤 교회가 성경적인지 아닌지는, 이론을 내세우고 논쟁을 벌이기보다 열매로 증명해 보여야 한다고 생각합니다.

Theology and church practices matter, but ultimately, what proves whether a church is biblical is the fruit it bears. A truly biblical church should display the same fruit described in the New Testament.

What kind of fruit did the early churches produce? First, unbelievers came to faith in Jesus. Second, believers’ lives were transformed. Third, joy filled the church. (Though almost every church in Acts faced adversity, the phrase “the church was filled with joy” appears again and again.)

By this standard, a church that sees conversions, but no life transformation is not biblical. A church that sees transformed lives, but no conversions is not biblical either. And if conversions and changed lives are present but joy is missing, it still falls short of being a biblical church.

In 1993, nine months after becoming senior pastor of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, I transitioned the church to the house church model. Soon, we began to see the fruits of a biblical church.

Unbelievers who had no interest in church started attending house churches, then Sunday services, and eventually received Jesus as Lord. Their friends, curious about these changes, also joined—and many came to faith. At the same time, believers who served as shepherds experienced transformation. People who once kept strict boundaries in relationships learned to embrace unbelievers with patience, love, and service. In doing so, they became more like Jesus.

As conversions multiplied and believers’ lives changed, the church was filled with joy. Negativity faded, and a vibrant spirit spread through the congregation. One member even gave up his lifelong dream of becoming a professor at his alma mater because he could not imagine leaving the church.

Jesus said, “You will know a tree by its fruit.” Instead of debating theories about what makes a church biblical, let’s prove it by the fruit our churches bear.
