목사, 일하면 안돼? (Your Can Quit Pastoral Ministry) – in Korean & English

한국 교회의 80%가 미자립 교회라는 통계가 있습니다. 많은 경우, 목사님이나 사모님이 직접 생계를 위해 일하지 않으면 교회 운영이 어려운 상황입니다. 특히 대부분은 경우 목사보다 사모님이 생계의 짐을 지고 계십니다.

목회자가 직업을 갖지 못하는 이유 중 하나는, 목사의 직분을 구약의 레위인처럼 특별한 신분으로 여기는 인식 때문인 것 같습니다. 마치 예전 몰락한 양반이 체면 때문에 굶주려도 일을 하지 않았던 것처럼, 세상의 일을 하는 것을 죄책감으로 여기는 것입니다.

그러나 주님께서 교회를 세우신 목적는 깨어진 인생과 사회, 자연을 회복하기 위해서입니다. 그 사명은 영혼 구원하여 제자를 만드는 것에서 시작됩니다. 이를 위해 주님은 다양한 사람에게 다양한 은사를 주셨고, 목사의 직분도 그 은사 중 하나일 뿐이지, 레위인처럼 특별한 신분은 아닙니다.

따라서 목회자는 사도 바울처럼 일을 하며 목회를 할 수도 있고(고전 9), 필요하다면 목사라는 직분을 내려놓고 평신도로서 사역할 수도 있습니다. 15년, 20년 동안 담임 목회를 했음에도 교인 수가 여전히 10~20명대에 머물러 있다면, 이제는 직장 생활을 병행하며 목회하는 것을 진지하게 고려해 볼 필요가 있습니다. 그렇게 함으로써 사모님의 짐을 덜어드릴 수 있고, 교인들에게 목사 가정의 생계를 책임져야 한다는 부담을 주지 않으면서, 소수의 교인들과 한 가족처럼 즐겁게 목회할 수 있습니다.

더 나아가, 아예 목사라는 직분을 내려놓고 영혼 구원 사역이 활발한 다른 교회에 평신도로 합류하는 것도 좋은 선택이 될 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 가정교회 사역이 잘 이루어지는 교회에서 목자로 섬긴다면, 주일 예배와 삶공부 같은 체계적인 인프라를 활용하여 담임 목사 시절보다 훨씬 풍성한 전도의 열매를 맺을 수도 있습니다.

중요한 것은 우리가 어떤 직분이나 직책을 가지고 있는가가 아닙니다. 어떻게 하면 영혼 구원을 가장 효과적으로 이룰 수 있는가 하는 점입니다. 목사든 평신도든, 그 사명을 더 잘 감당할 수 있는 길을 선택하는 것을 주님께서 기뻐하실 것이라 믿습니다.

Statistics show that nearly 80% of churches in Korea are not financially self-sufficient. Many struggle to provide even a living wage for their pastor. In such cases, it is often the pastor’s spouse, usually the wife, who takes on a secular job to make ends meet.

Why don’t more pastors work outside the church themselves? A major reason seems to be a lingering notion that pastoral ministry is a sacred status, like the Levites in the Old Testament who were wholly dedicated to temple service. Many pastors feel guilty or even ashamed at the thought of holding a secular job, fearing it might diminish their spiritual calling.

This mindset needs to be reexamined. The ultimate purpose of the church is to join God in His work of restoring a broken world—healing people, society, and creation. This begins with saving souls and making disciples. For this mission, Jesus uses people with diverse gifts, roles, and responsibilities. The pastoral role is one of these functions, but it is not an exalted rank.

The Bible itself offers precedent. The Apostle Paul worked as a tentmaker to support himself while doing ministry. Likewise, today’s pastors may choose to be bi-vocational—not out of failure, but out of wisdom, stewardship, and a desire to more effectively pursue their mission. Some may even feel led to step away from full-time pastoral ministry altogether and serve faithfully as lay leaders in another church context.

If a pastor has shepherded a church for 10 or 15 years and the congregation remains around ten members, it may be wise to prayerfully consider bi-vocational ministry. This can ease the financial burden on both the pastor’s family and the congregation, while allowing the pastor to continue enjoying ministry in a small, close-knit community—more like a spiritual family than an institution.

In fact, some pastors may bear even greater fruit after stepping away from the pulpit. For example, serving as a shepherd in a church with a strong house church system may provide more opportunities for evangelism and disciple-making by leveraging existing infrastructure such as Sunday worship, Bible studies, and community support.

Ultimately, the issue is not whether we hold the title of “pastor” or “layperson.” What matters is how effectively we participate in God’s mission to seek and save the lost. Whether through full-time ministry or in the marketplace, the Lord is honored when we choose the path that best fulfills His mission.
